reverse problems

we have a 30' /79 Catalina-with an automic 4,we are experiencing difficulty with reverse..it is extremely difficult getting from forward to reverse.sometimes it slides in easily, other times - very stiff.we have tried taking the linkage off the gearbox, with no success. we know there is an adjustment inside the gearbox but?any suggestions please!

Jane; It's probably in the Hurth trans, not the engine. A '79 might be due for a rebuild.
