I recently purchased my 1974 Catalina 27. now that it is in the water, I have found a problem with backing up. It seems like the boat just doesn't want to. I have a Johnson 9.9 outboard motor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Try starting out slowly......

.... throttle up gradually. If the sideways pull becomes difficult, throttle down, and steer the boat while coasting. Most of my backing up is leaving the slip. I keep the boat hook handy to fend off the dock or other boats if she gets off line. This seems to work best for me so, keep trying, Good luck.

more info on backing problem

Whar exactly does the boat do when you try to back her up? Does it want to move side-ways? My 380 wants to move to port, but if I do it slowly I can get some starboard steerage. I can move the stern over (to starboard) about 15 feet using 40 feet of fairway. Thats not nearly as much as I can move it to port when backing.

You can also...

...turn the motor itself as well as the tiller to compensate for the pulling. MJ

I too have a 74' with an outboard

I have the same boat and the same motor layout. Backing down can be a real nightmare. Ive found that if you use light reverse the tiller doesn't kick back and forth nearly so bad...does your tiller get reverse wash from the prop? I can turn the boat with the tiller if i take in mind that the tiller deflects the trust from the outboard. So if i turn the tiller to port the bow comes to port and the stern to starboard. Just remember easy on the throttle or the boat with be out of control real quick. you can email me if you have more questions about it....emofish@earthlink.net

What pitch prop do you have

I have a 15 hp johnson. Seems to me you do not have enough thrust. Find out what pich your prop is. I am swithcing to a lower piched prop for that reason. Also does your outboards exhaust discharge through the prop or out the sides of the lower unit. If it is through the prop the prop will. The prop will cavitate in reverse. Causing lack of thrust. The Johnson sailmaster exhausts through the lower unit. So hence the name (Sailmaster) I got this info from a Johnson tech. Slow and easy is always better. If your outboard sits in the well just use the motor to steer. Put the tiller amidship and lock it there. The motor will do all the work. Hope this is helpful. Joe Pasanisi

backing

I have a 71 with a diesel and the only advise I could give you is to practice, practice and practice some more. I'm sure we look like idiots in the marina but at least I can now back up.

Backing Problems

I have a 1986 catalina 27 with an inboard. And like others I too have a backing problem. With the prop beina a right hand screw the boat pulls to the port very hard. The previous owner told me a trick that seems to work well. 1.Put the engine in reverse and rev the engine for jus a moment to get some backward motion. 2. Then put the engine in neutral. With the prop no longer turing it seems to backup nicely. Good Luck !! John :O)
