How is a reverse polarity light hooked up into the 110 v system and what type of indicator light is used?

You can buy a reverse polarity indicator for about ten bucks at your local hardware store. It looks like a yellow cube and plugs into the 110 volt socket. Plug it in and read the colored lights. Once you are sure the hookup is the correct polarity, take it out and stow it until the next hookup.

Neon

The reverse polarity light is connected across the neutral (white) and ground (green) conductors in your AC system. The light is a 110V neon light available at Radio Shack - p/n 272-712 (red). The light may not be an exact replacement but it is very close. Part numbers for the green neon is 272-708 and amber is 272-707. Link below.

Plug In Indicator IS Worth Its Weight In Gold!

We bought the "yellow" plug (three prong) reverse polarity indicator at Sears twenty years ago and its one of the most important pieces of equipment for the cruising sailor. Simply it looks like any plug in portion of an electrical cord. Small and with three lights (amber and red) with written indicators of what each light represents. After you enter a new marina and plug in to shore power, simply plug this in in any receptacle on the boat and it will let you know by light code if your OKAY or have a reverse polarity situation. I never trusted my panel light after having one of these. They belong on every vessel! Bob Catalina 30
