Just bought a 1982 Catalina 30 with 30 hp gas engine. Have trouble getting tranny into reverse. Won't go into gear unless I really crank it. Then, when in gear it really handles like a pig. Is this normal ?

Gear shift lever on engine and cable to binnacle.
Prop walk if you have to steer to the right under power. Otherwise, check steering quadrant if you have a wheel.

Reverse gear on atomic 4 does not have positive detent so it seems like it isnt in gear- then you have to rev it up cause it is 2-1 gear ratio in reverse (i believe) so it really starts to whine when in reverse. when you hear it whining you should be going backwards.
Check out Moyer Marine. You can search through the threads on how to adjust the reversing gear. I did this and it was very easy following Don's instructions. Here is a link to one of the threads.

exactly what happened today. trick is to give more throttle despite the whining noise. Thanks again
