Reverse gear when sailing

I was just reading some notes from the past owner of my yacht and they say put the gear shift in reverse went sailing because gear is not being lubricated on prop shaft. Is this right should I be putting the gear leaver in reverse when sailing and not in neutral and letting the shaft spin

On a 44 you should seriously consider a feathering prop. Either Maxprop or Variprop. It will solve a lot of issues, including prop walk, manoeuvrability, etc.
Plus, it feathers when sailing. A 44 is a big boat, and certain items such as a bow thruster and upgraded prop are not really optional. I suggest you go for a motor on someone's boat who has one, and you will see the improvement in handling
