Retrofitting a Marine Toilet

We love our 1985 Catalina 25 (Hide Out) and have been enjoying sailing the Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay for a two seasons. The one thing that we would really like to change is the current Porta-Potty. It simply is messy and a nuisance that neither of us enjoys dealing with. We have come across a vacuum toilet system at a local boat show that appears to be suitable to retrofit in a small boat like the 25, but are curious about what other 25 owners think and have tried. And if there is a reason we should not consider this, and if we should, is there one toilet that is more appropriately suited for this boat than another. Any input would be greatly apreciated.

Port-a-Potty or Marine Head?

My last boat had a Port-a-Potty and I now have a C25 with a fixed marine head, and the marine head wins hands down without question, each time, every time. I will say that my marina has a self service pumpout that makes it easy and convenient to empty the holding tank, but if facilities weren't available then it might be a different story. If you are looking for a marine head system, you might want check Catalina Direct to see what they have to offer.

Check the experts forum for information from Peggy Hall, who has more better advice about head installations than anybody. BTW I favor the portapottie for limited use, just due to simplicity, but for extended cruising the built-in is better. The Practical Sailor has had quite a few useful articles over the years, if you can find a library or individual with back issues. Fair winds, ron Cat 25 SrSk Orion
