I am looking at a 1987 Catalina 30. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a stern rail seat kit that can be installed on older Catalinas, and where they may be found? Thanks

Right here in the 'Chandlery'

Phil, Check here in the chandlery under cockpit ... there is a listing for retro-fitted stern rail seats.

Do it yourself...

The guy that owns this boat did a cardboard cutout and took it to a plastic shop to cut out. He used stainless pipe and bimini fittings. I have more pics if you need it. Cheers, Rob

Make your own rear perch seats

I made my own rear perch seats for my C27 out of plywood: http://web.pdx.edu/~d1bs/SternPerchSeats-nocover.jpg I also sewed some covers for them using Sunbrella fabric: http://web.pdx.edu/~d1bs/SternPerchSeats-covered.jpg

i am a small person - 5' 7, 155- but my split backstay did not leave enough room for any brand of seats i have yet found comfortable.

SternPerch Seats

I installed SternPerch seats on my 88 Catalina 30 in/around 1995. They fit well and were resonably priced. I believe your 1987's sternrail is the same as mine. Please see the link below. They have a single leg which rests on the aft lazerette locker lid, which can get in the way sometimes, but since they can lock in the 'up' position, I just tip them up, lock them, then open-up the lid (while avoiding the Sternperch's leg). The leg is also removable on mine with just a wing-bolt, so for extensive work aft of the wheel, I occasionally remove the legs and just leave them tipped-up. Hope this helps.

i have them on my 1989 Catalina 30. they were 159 bucks each. everyone likes them since you are never in the way and they came with built in drink holder. i have never had anyone complain about the fit. great to steer from with your foot.

mortyd...

Some boats have an adjustable backstay. Its a system with a block and tackle. I thought the block and tackle was the part in your way. That's the part that can be moved. Of course, you could change out the split backstay into a straight one, but that would be a lot of work and you may even be worse off than what you have now. -Rob
