restoring the teak

I am restoring the teak on my OD25,I would like to take it all off.I have already pulled off the grab rails.I would like to pull the toe rails,and hatch slides off.I noticed dowels,where the bolts or screws should be.What I would like to know is if there are any surprizes under them aka nuts you can't get at,or screws that will not go back in.Should I leave them on,or take them off(would like to take them off,to clean and polish the deck.Thanks, JackTrip-J'sNarragansett Bay

Teak

Pulling the teak is time consuming but will lead to great results. Those dowels are teak plugs, pounded into the screw holes and sanded flush. If you sand around each one to remove the varnish over laying it, you will be able to pry them out to get to the fasteners. You will probably find screw heads under each with the nuts inside the boat.I would expect to have to replace many of the fasteners but they aren't very large so they won't be too expensive.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Removing teak

I also am in the process of removing all the teak from an OD25. One thing I discovered is that many of the scews on the toe rails were bent and hard to remove. The rails holding the main hatch were the worst. I blame myself for that. We were using electric screwdrivers and they striped the screws very quickly. Tried to drill them out and ended up damaging one side of the teak. When we went to a new standard scewdriver and gently tapped on it as we turned, the rest came right out. For cleaning the teak I used a mixture of 40% bleach/water and a soft brush. It did an amazing job. The plugs can be bought at any boat store like West Marine. Just be sure to measure to get the right size.Good Luck,David

Restoring teak

I replaced all the teak on the top side last year. The toe rails were SS screws behind the caps a and the hand rails were thru bolts, with access behind a plug under the liner.Took about an hour and two pair of hands.EJ TewsO'Day 25 _/)Jennifer Lea
