Over the weekend, I bought a small, ill-kempt O'Day sailboat as a summer project for me and my 9 year old son. We can't even ID it by model, for it has only an O'Day plaque with hull and model numbers on it. It is ten feet long, has a 56 inch beam and the sail has a red emblem resembling an S with a duck bill facing out of it. Looking at photos on this site, it appears to be a Widgeon, with a jib and all, but the length is only 10 feet and the sail emblem is not a W.

The hull is sky blue, interior white and turquoise, and I plant to repaint it inside and out. The white sails have no tears but are stained by algae and mold and rust that I could not get out even with a bleach/water solution. Any help with the model ID, the prep and paint process and sail cleaning tips are appreciated. I do have to rebuild the plywood tiller, but all wood parts are there for patterns adn hardware is still attached. There is one of two matching decorative trim pieces missing from the transom, roundish metal pieces that straddle the transom and hide the seam, and each is located located at the edge of the range of travel for the tiller across the transom. Is hardware like that still available for O'Days?

Again: thanks for any help and advice! -- Dan

cleaning sails

Dan,

Cleaning sails is a old, recurring question. I now leave it to a company called 'Sail Care'. When they clean sails they do a good job on repairs.

Getting mildew and other stains out is hard to do. Different things have be discussed on this forum and all other sailboat forums for years. Check the archives of this web site. Your host Captain Herring has tried to make them accurate and accessible.

I no longer suggest bleach on sails. It is said to cause deterioration of the fabric. So I now recommend that you thourghly rinse the bleach out of the sails asap.

Oxalic acid is an alternative but others point to issues with that. It appears that old fashion hydrogen peroxide might be the best thing out there. It is said that it is available in large containers (gallon jugs) for commercial uses. I cannot cite a source for the larger jugs. Wally has a quart size bottle.

Best wishes on the project with your son.

I scanned quickly through this site and it looks like it might be a Sprite. http://www.iheartodays.com/model_information.html

Don't forget oxy clean. I've had it get stains out that bleach can't. Oxalic acid is usually pretty good for rust.

For parts, give Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine a call (508) 644-3001 He was the Parts Dept. Manager at O'DAY from 1973 to 1989 (Sprite was last made in about 1970)
I'll include a couple of Sprite pics here for reference.

That ought to be a fun boat! Could you imagine flying a spinnaker in that baby?
