Still racing

I'm still racing my 26 - although not as frequently as I used to. In fact, the year it turned 25, we won the overall season championship at our yacht club on Narragansett Bay. Which model are you working with?

Ranger 26 Racing This Season

I bought my 71 Ranger 26 late last season and plan on getting back into the race mode this year. Will be doing the Wed night Beer Can series up in the Delta. With a set of new sails, I hope to give ya some feedback soon....

Racing R26

Tom, I have a 71 R26 that I race most Sunday's on Sarasota Bay in Florida. Winds can be anywhere from 5 - 25+. Two things that really help. One, get a small cabin top winch and lead your foresail haylard aft to it. The forces exerted on your Genoa and 135 are significant. Maintaining proper haylard tension keeps the draft forward and allows you to point. This is one of the Rangers strenghts. To be competative you must rig her to point. Next is reefing. Always reef the main first and reduce headsail second. She's a masthead rig and her drive is generated via the foresail. Keep her flat 15 degrees is optimal. Anything over 20 is slowing you down. Better to have a bubble in the main sail luff than to be on your ear going to weather. Play around with your back stay tension. Getting it just right helps you to point and keep her on her feet when its blowing.

Racing the 26

I am sorry I did not repond sooner. I have been away from my computer and in the yard. When I bought this boat it needed help, but it has nede a lot more than I imagined. It was white with a blue bottom, damage to the iron keel, lots of gelcoat damage, every block was frozen. all standing and runnng rigging have needed to be replaced. It had no sails. It is now red with a black bottom. The yard I went intohad real hard restrcitions on takling off bottom paint. my boat has 30 years on there and it is coming off in hunks, so I could not get a good clean bottom. I have a new set of sails ordered. I have take down the mast and redone the rigging. I was very surprised at the streaders. They are made of wood and the wood was in great shape. I have new standing rigging that will go up next week. I have a 155 ordered and do not yet have fairlead tracks. Evidently the boat did not come with them. Can you tell me how yours are layed out. I an planning on putting turning blocks aft of the primary wenches on the combing. I like a boat that can point, that will be nice. I have a new back stay and adjusting gear coming and I am familiar with that approach. What boats to you regulary compete against? You you know where I can find a working 90 or 110 jib? Thanks, hope to hear from you again. Tom

I have gotten a new set as well. But I am looking for a working 90 or 110 jib. Any ideas. Tom

Model

Mine was built in 74. I cannot distinguish it from another model. The early models came with wood toe rails, mine is metal with the continous holes. Other than that, I don't know what model. What has been the reason for your success? what types of boats do you races against? how is your fairlead track and blocks set up? These things would be helpful to me. Sorry I was away so long. tom
