We just bought a CAL 28 that crossed from San Diego to Hawaii. It is a solid boat, but in need of restoration. I am hoping to find other CAL 28 owner out there that I can ask questions of.. In particular, the cabin was gutted and rebuilt (badly). I have not had great luck finding original plans, specs on the net. But I have enought to give me an idea of how the dinette and galley once looked. What I don't know is: How was the table mounted (missing) How was the dinette seat back secured (missing) and what were the little pully and jam cleats on either side of the seat back used for. Pictures of the table mounting and seat back would be wonderful. Thanks in advance and Mahalo Nui Loa Marcus

Table and seatbacks

I was "given" (no such thing when it comes to boats) a Cal 28 in solid condition. BUT 2 owners ago decided to strip verything off of the boat (winches/pullys/deck hardware...) and re do it all. Well guess what. All of the hardware (assuming it IS all the hardware) is in boxes and like you, the table was removed as was the settee seatback. I am also missing the railing for the boat. I also have no idea where any of the lines go and all of the holes in the deck were gel-coated over. Any information you have, especially the table and seat back, would be a great help. Know someone who's been there!

I have added a link below to a web-site by Richard Fuller, it details the trials and tribulations of rebuilding a 1965 CAL 28. He has a scanned copy of the original brochure too!

I'm in the same boat

I too recently acquired a '64 cal 28 with a gutted galley and missing table. It looks like the table post supports are located by the bilge pump, or at least that's where I am going to rig it. In a way, I'm glad the galley is missing. It allows me to reconfigure that area for extra seating and storage. I made a long sitting area there with storage below. I will be putting the sink in the hanging closet opposite the head. The railing consists of four verticle poles with lines through the top. The link of the "old flat top" shows the origional configuration. I am going to put a safety net on the sides also. do you have any of the owners manuals on your boat?

Chesapeake Bay Magazine

I see you are a long way from here but the February 2005 issue of Chesapeake Bay Magazine has a wonderful article with pictures of the Cal 28. They can be found at www.cbmmag.net. They look like a wonderful boat to me. Would be a good step up from my Pearson 26. David
