Found I left some electrical tape on the deck. How do I remove the adhesive remains without harming the deck? Paul S/V Linda Belle

Acetone

DO NOT APPLY on the spot. Only apply the acetone to a rag and then use it to remove the adhesive.

Less Invasive would be...

...turpentine. It always breaks down adhesive gum.

Tape Scum

Interlux makes a product for cleaning and dewaxing figerglass. 3-M makes an adhesive remover. Both come in Qt. cans and have the consistency of turpentine. Acetone will work but only as a last resort. PAT

None of the above (or here, none of the below):)

Good ol' WD-40 is a better adhesive residue remover than 90% of the products are marketed solely for that purpose--and you already have at least 3 cans of it (doesn't everybody?), so why spend money for something else you're only gonn use 2% of? Spray it on...wait...scrub with a plastic scrubber...wash well with detergent and water. Done.

Skin so Soft

It smell a little bit better than WD-40. An added bonus is it works on bugs too. Regardless, both are good things to have around the boat.

Don't buy ISLAND GIRL for this- but you have it...

Any of the IG cleaners will remove tape residue- even baked on residue from vinyl stripes etc. Unlike acetone it will not damage the gelcoat but be careful on single part paint! On tape residue from duct tape (different type of adhesive) WD40 does work better but even better is the Xylol found in Goof Off! Jim W

Now I remember, Peggy

WD-40 was a hint that I read somewhere a while ago and had completely forgotten about it. Thanks. I have also found that just plain cleaner/wax works well on the scum also. I use Maguire's 50 on my hull and it cleans very well and removes all sorts of stuff. Especially the scum at the water line.

Goof Off does the trick

Use this product....sold at harware stores and Home Depot, Lowes. Acitone may hurt the gel coat....I would not use it on my boat's gel coat...I've only used it to clean the white life lines because you stripping the finish to get it brighter.

Goof-off worked for me

When I was young and foolish, I used cheap masking tape on the deck, and left it for a few days out in the sun. Boy was I ever sorry about that! The only thing that worked was Goof-off, a plastic putty knife, and lots of elbow grease. It took a day to get it all off. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty
