Holy crap! What happened here; I cannot see how they got attached and off. That rescue swimmer who dove in has brass balls.

I saw another version in which the boat was not in control and obviously had no engine power. Got in too close to the breakwater and sails were luffing; either panic or lines fouled or just couldn't get enough way to pull out. That would all be speculation however. Yea, that rescue swimmer..........geesh!

Nice how the boat turned and the sails finally gave it a little lift and off the rocks she went. Did someone fall off the boat or was that a rescue swimmer you are talking about?

They didn't get attached and under tow. The skipper simply went back to sailing the boat and took her off the rocks on a beam reach on his own. Never Stop Sailing the Boat NSSB.

That swimmer could have done nothing except recover another swimmer. The lifeguard boat was inadequately crewed to effect a rescue. NSSB.

Amazing it wasn't holed. Or the rudder snapped off.
Going to be some bottom painting due.
Looks like a Catalina 27. Probably a 70's or early 80's version, back when they still made hulls as thick as tank armor.

Wow! Scary.

It's a small miracle to get the puff of offshore breeze at that time of the afternoon allowing him to sail off the rocks.

That's just a couple of hundred yards from where the Martin 242 went crashing into and under the pier last March

That is what I saw, he got "Way on" and a good boom angle.
Jim...

I dunno, looked to me like the skip was reduced to lying in the cockpit trying to stay in
until the boat fell off enough and started sailing herself. Then he suddenly pops up
after shes underway. Almost like the swimmer was telling him to sail it....sail it..

I think about this scenario every time I set anchor for the night...

Unbelievable. Amazing it wasn't holed or the rudder lost. That guy needs to buy a lottery ticket.

It looks to me like the boat rotated off the wind far enough to get a bit of way on and then just hove-to and sailed herself away from the wall.

Toward the end of the vid it appears that a rescuer was transferred from the Lifeguard boat to the sailboat perhaps to secure a line

I went to full screen 1089p on my desk top and played it in slow motion. Here is what is best event scenario I saw.

1) Captain got caught in a Wave Action caused by the Jetty/Harbor.
2) Wave direction keep him in the Irons.
3) Captain and one brave crew [maybe a dog] did correctly and Stayed Aboard.
4) Captain kept rudder amidships and let the keel do the banging.
5) Swimmer jumps in water, but has his life line to the Rescue Boat.
6) Boat noses to the waves and wind got in the main.
7) Boat gets free and gets WAY ON.
8) No line ever attached as shown when the Boat passes the rescue boat.
9) Helper from Lifeguard boat tries to un-foul the jib. (big dummy no pfd)
10) Rescue swimmer hauled back to rescue boat.

Never a line attached to the sailboat.
Jim...
