Required Safety Gear

I was over at Lake Superior Sailors place and he was showing me how he had outfitted his boat ( lotta neat ideas- thanks) and were going thru all the "bells, whistles and horns" as well as MOB stuff fire extinguishers and PFDs, placards etc...

I didn't memorize it all, so was wondering if there is a list or link to the USCG "required" gear ( the stuff they would look for if you were boarded/inspected) and maybe lists of "really nice to have" stuff as well as "necessary but not required" stuff...

I have a 26' Paceship and have stripped 'er bare (gear wise) in the inside so starting from scratch for next season...

Mostly want to know what is "mandatory" so I don't miss anything, but also interested in what you think is neccessary for basic safety/comfort before we get into the "nice to have" frilly stuff

You mean like a French press for coffee? I think that list is going to vary widely. Depends upon where you plan to sail to a large extent. Like a big holding tank versus a macerator with overboard capability.

Yeah, I suppose that is an open ended question... I was thinking along the lines of foul weather gear, ditch bag (and contents), minimum electronics (both boat and personal) additional MOB and or safety gear..

Located Great Lakes, coastal crusing, weekender type excursions...

Here's the Mackinac Race Safety Regulations - http://www.bycmack.com/mack/pdf/2011_MSR_Monohull.pdf - overkill, but should give you some ideas to think about. Like the Safety Equipment Location Diagram - if you have a problem, will your guests know where to find the flares?

Speaking of flares, check into SOLAS flares rather than the minimum Coast Guard approved flares - they're supposed to work much better.

We have all the CAT 1 gear but with the vast majority of are races being CAT 3 stuff like the life raft ,jacklines and such stuff stay home and get put onboard for CAT 1 races

I think you would need to define the length of the passage and the body of water to be traversed to determine what would be recommended. I would not consider having a watermaker or a life raft for a daysail on a small lake.
