"Shogun" by James Clavelle
is one of the best books I've read. It's about an English ship pilot who makes it to
japan in the 1600s. Japan had only barely opened up. Sailing is a major theme that truns through it. I can't say enough about that book, esp typing one-armed (shldr surg this past Tuesday).

When I was a kid, I had a book with a series of stories about a bunch of kids that lived on and sailed (and rowed) on a large lake in England somewhere. I can't remember the name of it, though.
"Song of the Sirens" By Ernest K. Gann.
He owned a slew of boats and this title recounts the joys of sailing, ownership and camaraderie. Also a pilot, his other books include some excellent flying stories. My favorite "Fate is the Hunter".
