I would welcome some advice in purchasing a couple of good books on sailing. Ideally one somewhat fundamental (and easy reading), the other more comprehensive in nature. We are somewhat new to sailing and will be purchasing a 31-32' Hunter or Catalina. Hoping to coastal cruise the Atlantic in NewEngland. Kind Regards, Morgan

Cheap Chapmans

Many of the West Marines retail stores still have copies of the 63rd edition of Chapmans for 1/3 the usual price.

good books and other info

Here are a few excellent sources of information: www.sailnet.com/collections/articles/index.cfm www.boatus.com/MarineServices/default.asp www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/backfill.htm www.apparent-wind.com/sailing-page.html www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/WestAdvisorView?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001 http://131.230.57.1/ Look through them and I expect you will get many more ideas. Have fun.

Fundamentals of sailing,Cruising and Racing

by Colgate Is a good starter. Also, Coast Guard Aux. holds seamanship courses at local schools, etc. I'd recommend that, too. Fair winds, Tom

the Annapolis Book of Seamanship

by John Rousmaniere, is an excellent book, ranging from basics for the beginner(or those who won't admit they don't know) to navigating offshore. I bought my copy at amazon.com / used book section, which wasn't used. It just had the paper jacket missing.

Nigel Calder's Two Books...

.. Boat owner's Manual for Mechanical and Electricl Systems and his Cruising Handbook. If you want to keep spending down, simplicity and clarity up, in just two books, these are the ones. Stu

sailing books suggestion

Like you, I am somewhat new to sailing and thought I should read the easy books first...After spending lots of money on the easy books I found them much too simplistic...so, I brought Annapolis Book of Seamanship and Chapmans (64th ed) and they have become my learning source and reference works...I wish I had saved time and money by skipping the easy books.
