The numbers on U.S Small Craft, are they boat or owner licences? What are requirements. Is there web page detailing requirements? Thanks from U.K.

Most Are Boat Licenses

Local (statewide) laws govern much of the licensing requirements for small craft (not-for-hire). Generally, it is a registration fee for the craft in a state's jurisdicton. There are allowances for temporary passages (under several months). As far as operator licensing, there is no Federal requirement and none for most states. Hope this helps, and, to other posters, please fill in where I am wrong. Rick D.

What "numbers"...

exactly are you asking about? "Hull numbers" are state required registration numbers that are like a car tag. They vary state to state and are a tax based registration system of identifying boats, and collecting fees. We also have "Documented" boats that do not carry state "numbers", but pay state registration fees. Clear as mud right?! What is your specific question?

For Illinois

the regulations can be found at dnr.state.il.us Other states should have sites which will lay out their rules. Numbers on a boat resistered in Illinois would read something like IL 1234 AB. These are applied with stick-on characters or painted. This is in addition to the permanet hull identification number (HIN) given by the maker when the boat is made. As memory serves, I believe there is a 17 character format that needs to be followed. Jerry s/v Shapieron

Thanks from England

Thanks for the information. It is the water-craft equivalent of a car licence plate not an indication that the owner has passed the equivalent of a driving test. Do American boat owners have to take any form of test of competency?

In most

areas of the country the answer is no for private use. There are rules, at least in Illinois, concerning the age one must be to operate a craft. Yes if the craft is used commerically.
