I am having to re-power my Hunter 26. I'm looking at a Nissan 9.8 4-stroke for $2020 online. I would very much appreciate opinions, experience, reviews on Nissan outboards. Any experiences with buying online? It appears the Nissan is priced well below Yamaha and Honda. Thanks for your input. BrianW

Nissan

Tohatsu maunfactures Nissan and Mercury small engines. I opted for the 8hp Nissan 4 cycle and love it. It sips gas and is more power than I need for my Mac 26D. It's electric start and I use a litle maint free lawn tractor battery.

I believe that Tohatsu make the samll Nissan outbaords. They also make Mercury! I have an 8hp 2 stroke for my dinghy that only wighs 55 lbs, nothing but good service, just like their cars. Cheers Cat 30.

Get Remote Controls

I bought a Nissan 9.8 XLS, electric start, for my previous boat, a H23.5. It is a fine engine, but I did find the tilt control awkward, and I recommend getting the remote control version, as reaching down to shift while docking is awkward. I also had an issue with the steering tension adjustment, it stripped out once while sailing, motor while tilted, rotated with a bang. The adjuster seems marginal, for a sailboat you want it stiff. On my present boat a H26, it came with a Honda 9.9 also a fine motor, its tilt operation is better, I still wish I had remote control. The Nissan is the same as the Tohatsu which manufactures both, the Tohatsu's tend to be priced less. Before buying check out the operation of its tilt, throttle, shift and steering tension adjustment.
