The Yanmar 2QM20H in my E32 is ready for retirement. I would appreciate feedback from other E32 owners who have repowered. What engine did you use and what was required? Does anyone have experience with Beta Marine? Kirby

Yanmar

If you can find a drivet replacement Yanmar for your existing Yanmar, or rebuild that one, you can avoid the headaches of relocating the engine mounts.

Universal XPB-25

I replaced my aging Atomic-4 gasoline engine with a new diesel from Universal. It dropped right in and fit on the existing engine rails. The model is the XPB-25 with a Campbell Sailor prop and the set-up it sweet. Only had to bring out the companionway stair assembly by about 1/2" to clear the front pulley assembly on the engine. Electrical harness to panel was clean and consise. Really easy install!

Keep it simple

I own an E29 and replaced my A4 with a Yanmar 2GM20, I was assured that this was a bolt in and would only have minor difficulties with the installation. After dealing with all of the inherent problems of repowering the only advice that I will give you is to either replace your worn out engine with one of the same make and model or rebuild the one that you have. I'm not saying that there are not engines out there that are actually bolt in but it seemed to me that every company that I talked to said the same thing but once the check was cashed I was on my own. If the engine powered the boat well while it was running good you will really save yourself a lot of headache and heartache by just rebuilding the old one and keep on chugging. Hope this helps. Bob

No Direct Replacement for 2QM

Thanks for the inputs. Unfortunately it has been many years since the Yanmar 2QM20 was manufactured and the cost to rebuild is not that different than the cost for a new engine (assuming that a mechanic does the rebuild). The engine is built like a tank with massive amounts of cast iron. Frankly, my first choice is to keep it running but a 1978 seawater cooled engine, no matter how stout, is not going to last forever. I understand that the Universal 25 will drop right into rails fabricated for an Atomic 4 but the Yanmar 2QM20 mounts and rails are vastly different than the Atomic 4. The existing mounts are 17 inches side to side and 17 inches fore to aft. Has anyone had experience fabricating new rails/mounts? What process did you go through to make sure that everything would line up after the engine was mounted? Kirby
