I am looking at repowering for the second time. My first engine (2QM20) is still going strong with over 6000 hrs on it. (i sold it 16 years ago) My present engine is a 3GM30F with 6000 hrs on it. I want more power because I have a 5kw generator belted to it. I am considering the 38 hp Yanmar. I would like options like the 4jhe44 four from Yanmar.

Wow! a 5 kW gen belted to the engine! I would guess the 3GM30F has plenty of ponies to push our boats along (my 3QM30 seems to do fine) but an extra 5 kW belted on would eat maybe 7 - 10 HP? I assume you have one of those fancy variable speed generators...wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to sell the vari-gen and buy a stand-alone genset? I think one would fit in the starboard cockpit locker - quite a bit of room in there! Then you wouldn't be wearing out your propulsion engine generating electricity and a genset would probably be quieter and more fuel efficient. Just a thought anyway.
Or get rid of the generator altogether with a very light 3YM30 like mine. Then pick up several seconds on the PHRF. 
mine came with a 4jhe. great engine great fit. LOTs of power. I could easly two a 38 footer at hull speed without a strain.
