Repowering Yanmar vs Volvo

Hi All,

My Shannon 28' with a Perkins 4.108 was partially flooded and now has a blown transmission and water-contaminated engine. Additionally, inspection found piston and cylinder damage in the engine (high iron and aluminum contamination). The mechanics are recommending a full repower as the engine is 35 years old. The two most viable options in my area are replacing with either a Yanmar 4JH 57HP or a Volvo Penta 2D 60 HP.

Two questions:

1. I know Volvos have a relatively bad rep historically but does anyone have experience with the Volvo 2D? Reliability is the main concern. How does the Volvo 2D stack up against the Yanmar 4JH?

2. How far would flushing the engine entirely and replacing all filters/strainers get us? Is this just a dumb idea?

Thanks!

Actually, Volvos have a very good reliability reputation. The real issue is finding parts. The same is true for Yanmar, except it's not finding them, it's the high unrealistic prices. If you haven't yet, please investigate Beta. If not. Yanmar wins.

Rather than reinventing the wheel, try this:
