Repowering with outboard - Thoughts on these?

Thanks Joe. I got to looking for 27s with OBs and missed that was a 272. I did not realize there was that much weight difference between the two.
Further down the same site i did see a 27 with a photo of an OB mount. Again no wedge.

Maine89, Just for giggles I've attached pics of my mount, both inside and out, to give you an idea on how my transom was reinforced.

Thanks Ward - What's that mount plate made from? Was it included with your mount?

Sounds like maybe a 15 or 20hp would be better then due to weight? I would lose 5" on the outboard shaft if I left the 9.8hp class.

That setup was on the boat when I bought her in Oct 2012. The OB was bought in 2002 so I am guessing that is when the PO had it installed. Looks like a sheet of plastic of some type, maybe Starboard. I know there is no flex. Just as a comparison, I punched through 3' of chop with over 20 knots on the nose and 1/2 throttle kept me at hull speed.

Yeah, that 4 stroke Garelick bracket would work.

But I still like the look of the Garhauer:

That is the bracket that I, not real easy to raise on a regular basis because of all the cables and wires. When it is set up for remote I don't think any bracket will be. The remote shift and throttle makes docking really easy. I was able to use the cockpit remote controls that came with the inboard with just a couple of small mods to it.
Is your rudder like the one pictured or is it under the hull? If possible mount your motor in the middle. I would have but couldn't because of the ladder. As far as the motor length is concerned the long shaft is good enough especially if center mounted. At the time I was looking for a 10 hp 4 stroke or a 15 2 stroke. I bought the 18 because I couldn't turn down the price. I got it for 600 and it had only been used once. For another $150 I bought the brackets for converting to remote control. For around $100 I converted it to electric start. The $2900 for the Tohatsu 9.9 remote is not bad, and way cheaper than a new inboard.
For reinforcement I used some scrap 1/4" 3 x 12 SS plates sitting around the garage.

I have the ladder in the middle as well so a center mount would not work unless I removed the ladder. My rudder is below the boat however.

Shifting and steering is another concern I haven't been able to focus on yet. I had a hard enough parking at the dock with an inboard... I've read that the tiller shifters are ideal but I imagine remote is better but at a stiffer price. Otherwise I would have to try to steer the rudder AND the OB tiller at the same time? I suppose I could keep the OB straight and use the main tiller as if I was using the inboard?

Drum roll please...

After 3 days of obsessing and bothering any poor souls who dared to have a conversation with me I have purchased my engine.

I went with a 8hp Nissan (Tohatsu) 2-stroke 20" shaft with electric start for $550 from a really nice local outboard shop. Mainly because it is enough to move my boat but I can also remove it for service by myself.

I'm VERY happy (so please don't ruin it without a great reason ) since I feel so much more independent with this engine. The rest of the repairs required for splash seem like cake compared to my repower research binge madness.
