Repowering a Catalina 30

I recently purchased a 1976 Catalina 30, Serial No. 212, as a rebuild project. The existing engine was a block of rust, so I installed a Yanmar 3GM, 27HP engine. It fit the space under the galley perfectly, and the boat certainly moves right along under the new power. The new engine weighs less than 2/3 of the original one. I'm including a photo of the old engine, and I couldn't tell what it was. It's apparently a single horizontal cylinder diesel engine of some sort, and I wonder if anyone out there recognizes it. As you can see, the former owner didn't spend much time on maintenance. The rest of the boat was in pretty much the same shape, so we had to replace nearly everything. We now have a pretty nice boat.

Repower

You will love your new Yanmar. I have the identical engine in a Catalina 320...easy to work on, plenty of power and reliable. Check Yanmar's web site: www.yanmar.com/ And Yanmar's help site: www.yanmarhelp.com/msgboard.mv

Any more pics??

Hey Gordon, I'd be interested to see pics of the installed engine. I have a Yanmar, too, but mine sits up a little too high. I'd love to see the differences between our installations. Thanks, Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632

It Is A Yanmar YSE-12

Gordon, If the rusted hulk you are showing is the original engine, then it is a Yanmar YSE-12 with 12 HP. Wonderful engine in there day with great torque and woulld put the Catalina 30 to just about hull speed most of the time. Our 1977 had the same engine before I also did an engine swap, except I went to a Yanmar 2GM with 13 HP when the YSE-12 died. Had a newer 3GM been available as a rebuilt I would have grabbed it however none were available so have do with what we have. I would love to have that extra 100% HP. If you still have the rusted hulk, please hang on to it or give it to someone who needs the parts. From one who has worked on and had rebuilt the YSE era engines the parts are expensive. Any parts that can be rebuilt are worth saving/selling. Example a new YSE crankshaft here in Canada is $2,500.00. There is always someone looking for the YSE/YSB parts. I sold both my parts engines when I re-powered for $250 US for both, but it sure helped another sail boat owner out at the time. I also would like to see pics of your conversion as it seems that everyone is slightly different and each has its unique and great inovation ideas.
