I want to repower my old C-30 (1979) I have the original YSM 12. What could be the best with less trouble ? How about a new bed to adapt ? Thanks for your help !

There are a lot of choices out there. First you need to decide upon a budget in mind, & see what your funds permit. A rebuild of your existing engine is the most cost effective, but I have heard a lot of criticism of the YSM 12 being underpowered. I used to have an S 2, 28 footer with a tiny YSM 8 horse power motor. It was very tough & reliable, but on the small output side. But that boat only weighed 5,000 lbs, not 10k like the C 30!

I have heard good things about the Beta replacement diesel engines, & of course the venerable Universal 25xp diesels are a work horse. Universal is now owned by Westerbeke & the parts have gotten rather expensive. But every sailor has an opinion & I'm sure you will receive many. Good luck on your repower.

Our 78' C30 came absent a motor but was a diesel boat. Being handy and enjoying doing engine work we are repowering with an Atomic 4 gas motor. Have $2000 or so into the motor, $450 for fuel tank,$200 for control cables and $350 for a better prop I will endup with rebuilt fresh water cooled electronic ignition A bomb. Cheaper than a Beta and 20+ hp that fits under the bench with no hump.

Great support from Moyer Marine. I mention the Moyer marine because support for a lot of the diesel options can be sparce or expensive unless going new, then it is just expensive.

I repowered my 75 from a YSE-12 to a Beta 16, and I've been very satisfied with the result. It wasn't cheap by any means, but it starts instantly every time and pushes the boat up to 7 knots in flat water.

A 3-cylinder engine will not fit without modification to the engine bay, but the 16 with a shallow oil pan and high-rise exhaust manifold fit perfectly. I had to rebuild the engine beds but that was fairly minor.

I also replaced a seized Universal m25 with a Beta Marine 16hp. Great little engine and the Beta folks were fabulous to work with.

Re powered a 1978 with Universal 20hp. Changed bedding, otherwise fit perfectly. Amazing difference over that way under powered ysm12. Quieter, nearly reaches hull speed, and emergency reverse stops her in boat length. 16 I feel is too little. 25 if you've installed all your household appliances on board.

You'll want to change prop. You'll discover prop walk. I went with a 2 blade fixed prop.

A friend converted his to electric, even with extra batteries about 40% of engine compartment is empty and no fuel tank. The best is bumpy seas can't shove a bubble up a fuel line at an interesting time.
