I am working on a Hunter 28.5. The diesel mechanic says the 2gm20 Yanmar is froze up. We are going to pull it out. I know it depends alot on what they find when they pull it apart, but the question really is about the benefit to rebuilding an old motor, or repowering with a motor that is allready out and rebuilt.

second, any thoughts on being able to repower with a 3qm20H Yanmar. Is this feasable?

Thanks

Do you mean a "used" 3GM30? I would be more confident in having my own engine rebuilt than buying something that should probably be torn down anyway. In fact I did that once. I bought a used motor and it sat in the garage for four years before I sold it and bought a new engine. I could not bring myself to installing an unknown product. And I think that a larger and heavier motor is not what a 28.5 needs. You really do not need that 8 or 10 extra horsepower.

If you are considering changing engines, then you may as well think about a new one. Once they have to start with all of the realignment stuff you can figure several thousands in labor alone.

Ahoy neighbor,
I went through a similar decision regard my H-30 which has a YSM-12 yanmar. Af ter doing lots of research , Measuring, shopping etc;, I found that the actuall foot print, size and weight of a NEW 2GM15 Was smaller and lighter than my old 1979 1 banger that i have now.

The cost of a new 2GM15/2GM20 is abt $6500 depending on source and figure abt $85 per hr on Labor for install.

Good Luck but i would just compare rebuild cost verses new .

Fair winds and let me know if you hear of a hunter 33 or 34 for sale close by.

I am in the market to get a few more feet of boat.

C'mon Chuck, you wouldn't leave the Cherubini fold for an H34 would you? H33 OK but how 'bout a nice H36 or join the cutter bunch. Probably should look for a late model without the 'QM' motor. The 2QM20 and 3QM30 are great motors but so big and heavy.

Glen above already has a nice small and light 2GM. I agree, new is always best and I love my 3YM30. It is 250 pounds lighter than the 2QM20 that it replaced.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to pull the 2gm20 out and see what I find out about it. I'll let you know.

Had the 2gm in my 87 28.5 and could not ask for a more perfect balance of power. Currently have the 3gm in my 35.5 and would not change it either. Do NOT think the 3gm into the 28.5 is feasable. I'd look into a rebuild if they can't get it going. Those Yanmars should go up to 10,000hrs if treated right.

I don't know all your cruising needs, but I know that for me (where it would be enough for day/weekending, and would charge under sail for week long trips) I'd be switching to an electric.

http://www.electricyacht.com seems to be well reviewed. Less expensive and messy that a rebuild may be.

My H30 would be happy with one, but my Yanmar keeps chugging.

Seems to me that the 2GM is perfect for my 28.5, so I wouldn't alter that. I believe you're on the right track looking into fixing your own. For me it would boil down to the relative cost of the various options, but I would tend to favor fixing my own.

BTW, are you on the Hunter 28.5 owners' forum? It's
