I went with Yanmar 2GM20F

John, Here are the pros/cons with the motor i went with: Pros: It's an outstanding engine. smooth, quiet, reliable and it had a 5 year warranty where others offered 1 to 3. Cons: It's too tall for a C-30 engine compartment. You'll need to lift the dinette setee about 1" to allow for the extra space required by the fresh water cooling aparatus. If you go with raw water cooling, it will fit perfectly, but I decided FWC was more important than the 1" lift. One thing you'll want to consider is all of the additional stuff you may need to modify or outright replace, like exhaust hose, muffler, shift cables, prop shaft, prop, lag bolts to mount the motor mounts, etc. In the end, it was worth it for me. I've been in a few bad currents & some heavy weather & it's nice to know that you don't have to worry about whether your motor will start or not. the bigger alternator on the newer motors doesn't hurt, either. Good luck! Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Universal m3-20b

I just completed replacing my old 5411 Universal. No problem with fitting in the space but the engine bedding has to be reworked. Remember that shaft alignment is critical. The new engine has almost 10 hrs on it so far. The additional horsepower makes handling much easier. Why not just rework or replace the Atomic Four, unless you just have to have diesel ,it will be much less expensive. Also the modifications will be nonexistant. Here is a site with info on the engine. www.moyermarine.com for Atomic Four info or ---
