I AM FINALLY RE POWERING FROM THE OLD 2QM20 TO EITHER A beta 25. OR YANMAR3YM. i AM LEANING TOWARDS THE beta ANY THOUGHTS. my QUESTION IS i NEED TO REPAIR THE MOUNT HOLES FOR THE LAG SCREWS IS THERE ANY EASY WAY OF GETTING UNDER THE LINER TO INSPECT THE SUPERSTRUCTURE, OR WILL IT JUST HAVE TO BE DRILLING OUT AND EPOXY FILLING.

I would go yanmar, basicly because they are rugged, dependable and parts can be had almost anywhere overnight. they offer good manuals and service support. It remains the most used marine engine being produced.

I would go Beta - but also consider Nanni. Beta and Nanni both have Kubota bases. I was able to use the original engine stringers with the Nanni and it came with a 100 amp alternator to boot. The Beta has a huge flywheel so may be a bit smoother but I don't know how you get much better than the Nanni or Yanmar for smoothness.
I could find no way to get under the stringers on my 37C. Too bad. I would have preferred bolts to lags. I just filled the old holes with thickened epoxy.

I love my old 3QM30 Yanmar - old ones like this were originally designed for saltwater cooling (although mine is FW cooled) so the castings are super thick and heavy. Theoretically it could last forever. The newer Yanmars are lighter and higher reving, more like the Betamarine/Kubota. I would go with whichever diesel is the best value - both from initial pricepoint and for spare part prices. I suspect Beta might win on that count?

I vote for the yanmar. Just some info. Richard Mastry from Mastry Engines told me 25 years ago that the 2QM20 actually dyno'ed about 35 hp and the 3QM30 about 50. That explained why my boat was slower when I installed the 3GM30. The 37c really needs at least 30 real HP. If the 30 is reached at 3600 rpm, the boat will be woefully underpowered.

I just put a Universal M35B into my 37C. Engine fit well. Same engine as the Catalina 350 and Catalina 36. Just can't wait for the test sail, hopefully in a couple of days (maybe weeks). Spring get here!!!
