Hallberg-Rassy HR41 -
The existing engine (VolvoPenta MD21) in our Hallberg-Rassy 41 is now 32 years old. It is still running ok, but we feel that it is time to change it for a new engine (rather than having to do it when it eventually breaks down - which is bound to happen on one of the first days of our big annual vacation sail...).
The MD21 had a power output of about 45 hp according to the original sales brochure of Hallberg-Rassy (though it is sometimes said to be a 75 hp - those marketing people...).

Any ideas on what engine to get? (VolvoPenta, Yanmar, Vetus, Kubota...?)
More power, less power, same power?

Helpful comments from people with first-hand experience of the HR41 would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

Do you have the MD21a or Md21B? I am looking for an engine circulation pump (freshwater pump) for my HR38

Thanks

Hallberg-Rassy HR41 -
Sorry for late reply - we have been out sailing for 3 months :)

The engine is a MD21A (1978). We have put it up for sale (EUR 1500 complete with axle, propeller, gauges etcetc). See our website www.syanna.se
We ended up fitting a Vetus M4.17 (a 42hp Mitubishi-based engine). After 300hrs (yeah, we sailed to northern Norway and it involved a lot of fiords...) we can happily say that it was an excellent choice; enough power and a bit smaller than the original engine (and larger new alternatives), which makes changing filters etc a piece of cake. Fuel consumption is also lower; now we use about 2.5 liters per hour.
