I am in need of a repower, for a hunter 36.The weight is 13500lbs.I currently have 2qm20 yanmar, I am considering 18hp or might need to bump up to 27hp Yanmar.Does anyone have ideas? How about Yanmar vs. Universal diesels?

engine bump up

I'd go with the 3gm yanmar (if it will fit) your boat is about the same size and weight as the 356, and she moves pretty well with the 27 horse

Other choices too.

John: There are other choices too. Check out Bukh too. Nice engine and an easy replacement for the Yanmar. There are some other good choices, so check them out before you decide.

re-power

I have the 36' with the 2QM 20 also. I would not recommend the 2GM as a replacement. It is just not as strong as the QM series. I have considered re-powering also and have investigated the small 4 cylinder Vetus engine. Smoother running with a little more horsepower than the 3 GM which I am also considering. The Vetus engine is built on the Mitsubishi block. The distributer offered a good price and there appears to be good customer support.

Looking at Vetus also

David, what's the price you're looking at for the Vetus 3 cyl?? Oops, just re-read and realized you're looking at the 4cyl. JF

westerbeke

I just finished a repower of my Hunter 37 cutter (17,800 lbs per the spec sheet) with a westerbeke 3 cylinder 31Hp. I also reproped with a campbell sailor 3 blade and i am very happy. The engine is based on the mitsubichi(sp?) block. it is a 3000 rpm engine and i can reach hull speed at 2000. Replaced a 4-108 monster 4 cylinder that only put out 37 hp. did the whole install myself with the help of a few friends....I would make my MAIN CONCERN the mounting beds that are built into the boat. The engine cost was about $7200+/- another $1000 for prop, exhaust and all the other things that i decided to replace at the time the engine was out...I LOVE MY NEW ENGINE, and if you want i can send pictures of the install (big files and i don't know how to send them compressed.) don't be afraid to do it yourself, it is not as hard as it appears. the actual install, after the old engine was removed and the engine room prepared, only took a sat and sunday. another 2 weekends to finish up the exhaust, water lines, water heater and etc, and she came alive on the first try....good luck and go for it chet p Harriet's Chariot H37C...just one final note....if you do it yourself you will know EVERYTHING about your engine and it's workings, nice to know 100 miles from the nearest TOWBOAT US....FWIW

Westerbeke Chet P ?

Chet P. - The salt water cooled Yanmar on my 37C died and I have a Westerbeke 4-107 that I plan to put in there. My question for you is: What trans / shaft size / and prop rotation did you have when you had the 4-108 in your boat? I would like to use a hydraulic gear in my boat instead of the old mechanical Paragon that is on the 4-107 that I have, but I don't know what will fit. By the way, I just found this site and it is Great!!!
