Repower 33 - what engine to use?

I have a 1980 Hunter 33 with a 2QM15 Yanmar engine. I need to rebuild the engine or replace it with something new. Yanmar now makes the 2GM20 with 18 HP and the 3GM30 with 27 HP. The 2GM20 has more HP than the original engine but less torque. The new engines are smaller and probably will have different mounting requirements. The original engine was a bit under powered in my opinion. Any information would be helpful.

versus new? Was the old engine able to get your boat to hull speed at around 3500 RPM?Terry

My H37C with its 2QM20 will need replacing one of these days. I have been researching the question for about five years and had pretty much settled on the 3GM series. Now there is a 3YM that is appealing.There are several good diesels out there and most are cheaper than Yanmar. As long as the difference is less than $1000. I will stay with Yanmar. H33 Engine Upgrade

I repowered with a 2GM20F It went in without any modification to the engine bed. I mounted almost exactly where the QM was and added a prop saver which took up 1 inch. Its smoother, quiter,about 70lbs lighter and makes a little more power. It makes it's power at a little higher rpm than the QM15. Fresh water cooled also means hot water on the hook. I dont know if its as bullet proof as the QM series but I dont regret changing. My 14-10 three blade prop allows me to turn it up to its max rpm of 3500 when its clean.

Repower cost

I have been told that a rebuild will cost about $3,500. A new 2GM29F will cost about $6,000 not including installation.

What about 3GM30

Did you consider a 3GM30? It is a bit more narrow up top and about 3 inches longer. I believe it can be purchased for about $600 more.
