I have owned my Y33 for two years and continue to be impressed by it. Next fall I am planning to take the boat down to the Sea of Cortez and I have been considering repowering her. In my boat the YSM 12 sits beneath the V-birth and as there are no problems yet she is, and has been for 27 years, salt water cooled. I am imagining it will probably be more affordable to install a new engine in the states so I was wondering if any one else with one of the Y33's with the forward engine has looked into this and is there any insight into the project.

I replaced my Yanmar YSM 12 with a Beta Marine 20 HP Engine. Works great, less weight, very little fuel consumption change. Google Beta Marine and check out what they offer. I understand that they are supplying a extra two years extra maintenance supplies with a new order. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at....montywhitt@hotmail.com

putaputaputaputa....

Noah, I converted my YSM 12 to fresh water cooling (Heat exchanger and pump added) , cleaned out the salt deposits from the cylinder block and replaced some parts in 2003 The engine is not powerful, but gets me where ever I want to go for "peanuts". I get 4 1/2 to 5 knots with my 3 bladed Gamble prop. The cylinder sleeve, piston, pin and rings are still available for a complete rebuild. It will last a lifetime this way and after all we're sailors. Luke

Dear PutaPutaPutPut

In you reply you mentioned a "Gamble Prop", with which, I do not know anything about. Where can I go for information?

Gamble prop

The 3- bladed Gamble prop was bought at "West by North" www.WestByNorth.com or 604-506-2032. Happy New Year everyone and Happy Sailing in 2008. Is there some interest for a Rendez-vous with Yamaha owners??? I certainly would like to see this in the new Year. Cheers, Luke

Y-33 Tall Rig Question

HI, your message I believe indicates you have a Y-33 Tall Rig with a front mounted engine? I have a 1981' 33 TM and it has the engine mounted under the cockpit (Yanmar 2QM 15) in the back which I believe biases the weight to the rear significantly. If you are in the H20 currently do you notice that your H20 line is correct relative to the hull cast area or does your boat seem to set "down" in the rear like mine does? What year was your boat produced? It looks to me like the mfr. moved the engine and did not change any other weight distribution which as I mentioned bias's the weight to the rear at least on my boat. Craig

weight distrobution

My Y33 w/tall rig was sitting in the water pretty much right on with the water line until I installed a 24"bow roller with a thirty five lb anchor and 100 feet of chain in in the locker. Now she is a little bow heavy but evens out with two people in the cockpit. I asked a friend who was real involved with the IOR circuit in the 70's what he thought about the boat being a little bow heavy and why the engine would have been up there and he said several of the smaller IOR designs distributed weight in the bow in order to get the maximum out of the rating system. I wonder if your boat may sit more evenly if you had a heavier anchor system and a couple sailbags in the focsl. I know that we bring the anchor below and stow the chain in the middle of the boat when we go offshore and that does affect how she behaves a lot.

Noah, Not to hijack the thread, but could you post a picture of your bow roller and anchor set up? Do you have a windlass? I'm looking to see how others have done it before I tackle installing a windlass on our boat.

Bruce likes it too

Noah, I have solved the manual anchoring problem by having a 2 speed winch installed on the lower end of the mast. This mast winch is useful for other reasons as well. With a short piece of line with a S-hook on the end, I pull the anchor from the best of holdings. No added weight to the bow, no batteries to charge up and maintain, no expensive and complicated installation. The S-hook of course hooks into the 66 feet of 5/16 chain, which is connected to my 22 lbs Bruce anchor. With the help of an additional 10 lbs lead ball, I have a simple and up to now accident free set-up. With the YSM 12 under the V-berth I hesitate to add more weight to the bow. Yamaha engineers have done a great job with the weight distribution of their boat design and personally, I don't like to make major changes here.

windless

I am working on getting a picture of my windless but I will not get to the boat until next week. I have a manual lofrans Windless installed just in front of the anchor locker. It is the smallest one the Royal model. In front of that is a rather long bow roller made by Garhauer. In Southern California it is not uncommon for me to anchor in 100 feet of water so it is really important to have a good, if slow, way to retrieve the anchor. I have pulled the 100 feet of chain up by hand in 40 feet of water but I don't think I could do it with out the windless in 100. The winch on the mast sounds promising, It seems that every thing is a trade off when installing more systems on a smaller boat. -noah
