I need to replace the brown vinyl rub rail insert on my C30. Where can I get a replacement? Is this a doable job for a non professional? Need helpful hints/advice. Thank you.

Catalina Direct

I have just ordered a roll of tan rubber insert (80') for my C-30 from Catalina direct. I have also ordered a 6' section of aluminum track to replace a damaged section. Give them a call.

Bill, how much$$?

Bill, If you don't mind me asking, how much does Catalina charge for the rub rail?

vinyl rub rail

I did mine last fall/winter alone and I also replaced the aluminum track all around. It was a bigger project than I thought. I searched the archives for advice but found that my fingers could only do so much at a time before getting very sore. However, in the end I was very pleased with the improved appearance. It took me many weekends.

What was so hard?

John, What was the hardest part of the job, replacing the alumn track or inserting the vinyl rub rail? Again, if you don't mind, approx how much did the job cost, alumn $?, vinyl$? Thanks

Unless you are putting it in on a very warm day, use a hair dryer to warm it up. Makes it a lot easier to work with.

what i did

i don't know what kind of damage there is to your rail. catalinas are notorious for the mildew that discolors the rail. if this is the problem, you can take a piece of closed cell foam or a stiff piece of scotch-brite to use as a sanding pad. wrap a piece of 150 to 220 wet sand paper around it and sand the mildew off. it looks great and the very small scratches (not easily visible) keeps the rail ventilaed and prevents future mildew.

installation

on many occassions when working with strong friction, i have used ky jelly to lubricate for installation (when you quit laughing, continue). you can mix a solution in a spray bottle and spray the track and insert both. you may try soaking the whole thing in a tub or trashcan full of very hot water first. when you are through, the ky will rinse off with water. i would not suggest vaseline.

Cost from Catalina factory

Just bought the rub rail and aluminum from the Catalina factory to repair damage from Hurricane Marty. Aluminum rubrail is $1.90 ft. The vinyl rubrail is 1 5/8 in and costs $1.60 ft. Call Catalina, they're still in business and stock most Catalina parts...and they will fit properly.

I've done it twice!!!

'Bout a dollar a foot from Catalina. Grey (for grey decks) or tan. Make sure you install it right side up... The screw heads on the extrusion fit the vinyl rub rail only one way. I heated mine in a pot of hot water along side of the boat just before I installed it. Crucial!!! Hard on the fingers....but well worth it! Because I am ........Anal!! Good luck!

I found removing several hundred 21 year old screws, stainless into aluminum, very difficult and working from a ladder during all this. Also with the rubber I tried the heat gun, KY jelly, hot water but found a stubby screw driver and my thumbs the best. I did this alone and a partner would help as the weight of the very long insert rubber piece makes it difficult. You should fill in all the old holes and need to drill thru the new aluminum into the hull. Good luck.

Rub Rail Color

To those that have replaced the rub rail, have any of you chosen the tan? Is it a true tan? My current rub rail is a sort of yellowish/gum color that you may remember from those old block erasers we all used in school. I have a camel colored hull and tan would be the only aesthetic choice but I am hoping it is a true tan, and not the yellowish/gum color.
