I want to replace a couple of turnbuckles, barrel type, to the open style and may also replace the open ones. They all look fine and the rigging looks fine. I don't know if they were every replaced. Any thoughts on what manufacturer to go with, are there any differences and what about price. Thanks.

I've yet to rig up my C-22 and found a barrel type loose and laying on the gunwale when I got it home. It's not a spare. Should you make the "conversion," I may be in need of one, either as a spare - or if another one was loose and was lost in transit.

The snow is finally melting and I may do my first dry-run rigging this weekend. If all the stays have buckles, I'll be fine. If not, I'd rather have your used OEM buckle than a rather pricy and unknown quality replacement.

I'll let you know what I've got ASAP. Keep me in mind if you convert, please.

I was missing a turnbuckle when I bought my c22. I just ordered a couple open style from Catalina Direct. I believe they are about $16 a piece for the stainless steel 1/4" thread. I just bought one from Ebay and curious to get it and compare quality with the CD version. I will eventually change all from closed to open style.

I have two extras that the PO gave me, send me the address and I will send you one. Richie

I found a website that has really good prices. I replaced all of mine with these...

They seem to be pretty good to me.

I would suggest the CD or the C.S Johnson turnbuckles from West Marine for one important reason... They are chrome-plated bronze, not stainless steel.

As the CD site states, the bronze turnbuckles "won't gall like stainless against stainless". I had this problem with an old closed-bodied turnbuckle and ended up replacing the forestay because the turnbuckle had seized - how galling (pun intended).

I can think of more exciting things to spend money on that $16 turnbuckles. That adds up quickly, but beats having to replace the $85 forestay, the $125 lower shrouds, etc. You get my drift... Oh and buy at least one extra in case you lose one on the highway. Be there, done that too.

You should change eventually to immediately.

A number of years ago a dockmate lost his forestay turnbuckle in high winds. He immediately turned downwind, avoided losing his entire rig, and replaced all of his CLOSED BODY turnbuckles.

Hearing about this, I decided to immediately do the same. As the rigger was removing my single backstay closed body turnbuckle, it simply snapped in two!!!

He said, "Stu, good thing you brought the boat in today and not tomorrow."

I beg you to replace all of those close body turnbuckles, for your own good.
