How I Did It
Hey Anthony, I did a simple modification for a 2:1 purchase for about $100 that works very well. I used the existing track and car and the only extra equipment needed was Schaeffer 74-22 port and starboard ends; two Schaeffer 03 blocks and some 3/8" NER Sta-Set. 5/16 would work fine but 3/8 is easie ron the hands. JSI carries the hardware. Remove the end stops on the track; slide the old pin stops off. Attach the new 74-22 ends to the track. This will require drilling a hole straight down and anchoring it with a nut inside the cabin to securely hold the end.. Not a tough job and holds just fine. I attached the two 03 blocks to the existing traveler car....one will fit on each side of the car. One thing, the cam cleats on the ends are low to the deck so I used 1/2" plywood to shim the cam cleats...this gives a better angle to engage the cleat with the line. I spliced one end of a line to the traveler end, ran it through the block at the car then back around the block on the end and lead out the cam cleat. This setup allows the helmsman to control the tiller and play the traveler in gusts from the high side when heeling and does work quite well. Its basic but a huge step up from the impossible to adjust pin stops. If you wanted to go with 3:1 purchase, JSI has a kit for $353. This includes track tho you don't have to replace it. You could contact them and see what it would cost without the track. http://www.sailnet.com/store/ 3:1 would be a plus if consistently sailing in heavier winds. I haven't used the windward sheeting cars. They seem to be a great setup but you would have to replace the existing track with Harken. Hope this helps. Dick
