Replacing Through-Hulls on Cat 27 1978

Hi all

I am about to pull my old sea-cocks out and replace with marlon sea-cocks. I currently have the factory gate valves with a flush through-hole. Just wanted to get a heads up if anyone ran into trouble pulling their old ones out. I have read Don Casey's Old Boat cover to cover and plan to try it on my own. Input is welcome!

Great thread caguy! I am going to follow Maine Sail's article for backing plates.

I have begun the process and a couple of quick questions have come up.

1) 2 of the three have a fiberglass layer over the through-hole (see first pic) and do not look like they have a backing plate. What is the best way to work through this top layer to get to the hull layer? (sand, grind or chisel away). I tried to scrape and chisel with little success.

2) I am looking for some input into what lies beneath that fiberglass layer (second pick). What i have is the original flush through-hole with gate valves (pick 3). Does any catalina 27 owner know if these are bolted through the hull, or have a backing plate? Would love to know what I an getting into here. This is for the toilet intake and sink drain.

I got my water intake one (with backing plate) off no problem and will remount a backing plate following Maine Sail's technique.

I don't know what all your thru-hulls feed or where they are located in the boat, but just a thought- is this a good time to put in one larger thru-hull and run all of your water intake hoses to it- like a manifold?

Maybe also use Peggy's idea to use the sink drain to feed over to the head intake as long as you're re-plumbing? I did mine, and suggest you doing it.

on my '77 the factory thru hulls were simply a close nipple glassed into the hull. No backing plate, no bolts, just glass built up.
