We have had our 1982 sirius for over 10 years and windows are getting tired. They plexi has started to crack and I am looking to replace them. I am quite handy but wondered if any knew of a trick to get the windows out. The rubber molding on the inside is still flexible. Any thoughts or tips?

replacing the windows was my project last spring. I took a template of the existing window and had new plexi cut. I went untinted and it looks sweet.

I then smashed out the old windows. I tried using guitar string and a person in side, after pulling back and forth a million times, and breaking the string repeatedly we gave up. I even tried cutting it all back with a sharp knife a few times.

smashing the windows and doing a straight repair is the way to go!

the previous owner had the windows held on by screws. Once the old windows were off i cleaned the mounting surface, removed all the cracked gel-coat, re filled, sanded and sealed the surface.

I used a double sided adhesive strip and 3M 5200 to seal the windows back on.

The boat went through winter and spring storage (outside under a tarp) with out a single drop inside. dry as a bone.

Rubber gasket?

Sirius repair, do you have a 21 or 22? If you have a 21, did you re-use the rubber gaskets? Doesn't sound like you have the gaskets, which wouldn't require you to use guitar strings.
Please clarify

Our boat is a 21. It still has the rubber gaskets. I am going to give removing the gaskets another try today and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'll have to resort to the smash and rebuild technique. Thanks for the advice so far. I will post the results of the work when I am done.

Hey,

my boat is the sirius 22. it did not have a rubber gasket. it may have been replaced once already. make sure you take a template of the window before you break it. and, get the window made up so you dont have the boat sitting around to long with out the windows on it.

Sirius 21's had the oval shaped fixed ports and the rubber gaskets. The Sirius 22's had smoked surface applied ports. The Sirius 22 came out in 1985. I sold the last Sirius 21 built into PA.

I replaced my window this spring with new lexan and new rubber with a removable lock. About a $200 job with new rubber and lexan. Really improves the look of the boat, well worth the $200.

I am having trouble finding replacement rubbers for my 1979 Sirius 21. Mine are very hard and sun damaged - and leaky. I think the answer to the leaks are complete replacement. Do you have a complete spec. of the new rubbers you used?

Windows

What I did is talk to a local glass shop on getting new glass and rubber. He told me to cut off a piece of the old rubber for a sample. He needed this for sizing and style (self locking or separate lock) of the old rubber. He ordered a roll because they didn't stock it and I had to purchase the full roll 50ft, you would need at least 36-38 ft anyway. Once the new rubber showed up I cut out one of each of the two different windows and took it to him to cut me two of each. I borrowed his tool for installing the glass (Lexan) and installing the lock and did the job my self. I think the whole job cost less than $200 and added $2000 to the look of the boat!!!

Good luck!!
