Replacing the traveller track

I'm planning on replacing the traveller/track on my boat this winter. The port side bolts are easily accessible but the starboard side ones seem to be in some sort of fiberglass tunnel. I spoke to someone at Hunter who said " yeah, we put an aluminum backing plate in there and just used sheet metal screws without a nut". Wondering if anyone has changed the track, what kind did you use, how did you do it, etc. ?? Alan

Backing

Alan: We replaced the traveler on our H'31 with a Harken unit. The machine screw are in an alum. plate. We ordered a harken unit and they drill the track with the same centers as the original unit.

tracking

Don't be surprised if you find that some of the threaded holes in the alum. backing plate get stripped out when you remove the stainless steel screws. You may need to drill & tap them to the next larger size. Also be sure to use an anti-siezing compond on the screws, otherwise, they will corrode the aluminum backing plate.
