replacing the rudder bearings

My rudder is wobbly and I probably should take it apart to see how the bearings (if there is such a thing) are. My rudder is attached at the top and bottom, and the bottom is where it is the worst. Anyone ever replace or repair such an animal? I will probably have to take the mountings out from inside the boat. I wonder if there is a rod going through the rudder, or if it is attached only at the top and bottom. Hard to explain. Anyplace to look, search etc. for a solution?

Too much information?

Sorry to hear about your rudder being wobbly ... have you tried Viagra? Do you also happen to have a boat? What kind of boat might it be? With just a little more information someone might be able to help. :)

I thought I would be generic just to see what types of set ups there are. My boat is a 1976. There can only be two ways for the rudder to attach. One is a rod running the length of the rudder. The other is setting the bottom into a slot, then setting a pin into the top hole. But I am curious as to what the pin, bearing, etc looks like. Guess I will have to take it apart and see. I do my own work (or used to but my arms are getting old and don't have as much punch as they used to) and thought this would be a good winther project. That and I can redo the fiberglass on the outside of the rudder, do a takeoff for those that need it, and at the end, be confident it will work.

I had a Hunter 27 that had a loose rudder

post. I followed the Gougeon brothers advice given in one of their boatbuilding books and had good results. Their method is to remove the rudder and wax the hell out of the post. With the rudder off the boat, drill some small holes near the top and bottom of the rudder tube. Put the rudder back in the boat and then inject a mixture of epoxy and graphite into the holes in the rudder tube. On my Hunter, I screwed greese zurt fittings into the holes in the rudder tube and used a greeze gun to inject the epoxy/graphite mixture. I was very pleased with the results.

Epoxy?

Epoxy lubrication for the rudder bearings? That sounds like a strange idea to me.

Carbon filled epoxy bearings are VERY common .....

Go to the Pearson26 website to learn how to do it. Its a very good method to repair plain (delrin) rudder bearings.

Carbon filled epoxy bearings - online resources

What online resources are there that describe how to do this? RichH mentioned the Pearson 26 site. Got an address?
