I was searching the archives and I found a post about replacing the Rope Cluch on a 25.5. The post mentioned an aluminium backing plate. Is this plate between the inner and outer shells? Second, and this may sound dumb, but I am new to sailboats. I have a Jib Furler do I need to replace the rope clutch while the furler is off or is there a way to do it once the furler is rigged? Thanks, Jeremy

Rope Clutch

Yes, the aluminum backing plate is between the inner and outer shells. I don't quite understand your question about replacing it while the furler is up -- do you have a tensioned line in the rope clutch when the furler is up?

I guess I don't understand....

how the furler is attached then. Right now the jib and main halyards are running through the rope clutch. Since I have only had the boat a few weeks and the jib halyard was clamped in the clutch I assumed the the furler was connected to it in some way. -- Jeremy

clutch and furler

I had a 25.5 for several years. I replaced my clutches. some holes matched up to the old. I filled the ones that did not with epoxy. I then drilled new holes through the aluminum plate and used a 1/4 x 20 tap to thread the hole for the 1/4 in bolts. Be careful not to drill too far and end up through the cabin liner. I drilled until I could feel a change in resistance when I was through the plate. Or you can check the depth of the old holes and mark the drill bit with tape at that depth. The furler does not hold up the mast so wherever the halyard is it can be loosened. some furlers have an internal halyard that you adjust at the furler. Some lead the halyard down the mast and to a cleat on the mast, deck, or to a clutch

How is it attached?

Is the Jib Furler attached to the ForeStay or to the halyard or both? If I release the clutch what should it do nothing? I guess I don't even know what or if the jib halyard is attached to? Thanks, Jeremy
