I will be either replacing my 1" drive shaft in my 1988 Hunter Legend 37 with a Acquamet 19 stainess steel shaft or have the older bronze shaft straighten. In this whole process I will have the opportunity to replace the old cutlass bearing which is made of Delron and requires a packing with a PSS dripless cutlass bearing. I have heard from a few people that I should stick with the old packing style bearing and others say go with the dripless. I don't know which way to turn. Your ideas would be very helpfull.

Dripless packing

I installed a dripless bearing on my lasat boat, a Tartan 26. My present Catalina 30, had one installed for several years befor I purchased the boat. I feel that this is the only way to go! There is no drip, no wear on the shaft, and no adjusting!

Mickey, some options;

Your terminology is slightly off, you say: "In this whole process I will have the opportunity to replace the old cutlass bearing which is made of Delron and requires a packing with a PSS dripless cutlass bearing." You are referring to the 'shaft log'. The cutlass bearing is located in the strut, outside the boat. It is that water cooled and lubed, rubber lined bronze insert that holds the rotating assembly. It was invented by B.F Goodrich during WW2 for landing crafts,,,, OK, I'll stop. :) Seriously, you can use the drip free system. Lots of people do. I used it once and it didn't work out. The 'dripfree' people have solved those problems. Because of the problems that prevented me from using it on my H34, I used the stuff sold by bosunsupply.com. Others sell it too. It is a wax like substance that replaces the middle packing in your shaft log. I installed it in the '80s and have never had to add to it or service it in anyway, including never having to snug up the adjusting nut on the log. It costs less than $40.00. I just checked my bilge this week. Totally dry. :)

Nice Web Site, Fred

Fred, great job on your website. It wore me out getting through the whole collection of photos though. Kudos to you on your refurbish. Latts & Atts mini Christmas party At Charlie's by Shilshole on the 20th. Join us. Sean

Fred

Didn't realize this was your site, Fred. I had been on it before, and it was very impressive then... still is. I believe your boat is a Hunter 34. Did you ever figure out how much the total refit cost you? Now, I know who to talk to if I run into trouble getting anything in the "Lady" fixed. Steve "Sailing Lady" Everett WA

Fred, is the outlet in the galley GFCI protected by the first one in the circut?

straightening the old shaft

Hello Mickey, If you have a bent shaft, I would certainly consider replacing it versus straightening the older bronze shaft. I guess it has a lot to do with cost but to get a "bent" shaft straight along its full length can be a project. Jack
