I plan to replace the cockpit drain hose this spring. It is the corrigated plastic variety and since it drains just below the water line, I'm worrried. I wonder why so low when it seems thay could have gone a couple inche higher just above waterline. The plastic through the hull fitting is sound and doesn't leak so I'm not planning to replace it. (though I wish it was valved). Any suggestions on what to use and should some sealant be used? thanks John

This is a standard replacement item

on the 23. Use ribbed hose with two clamps at each end if you have room (I did). On mine, the hose through-hull is above the water line even with the O/B mounted unless I lean over the transom. Do you have a lot of gear weighing the boat down? At the same time, replace the anchor drain hose...they are both prone to splitting and leaks. The cockpit drain will sink the boat if it is below the w/l.

Drain Hose

You're right it is above, but just above. Close enough for me to be nervous about it. Thanks for the info John

You could glass it up.....

and then drill it out, put a thru hull fitting with a ball valve on it if your worried, other than that, i would use hard wall hose. I rather have a hose that is over rated for the job versus having a hose that is under rated blowing out causing the boat to sink.

Go with the ribbed hose...

Chris has it right. Ribbed hose will work just fine. Mine lasted 20 years before I had to replace it. It isn't going to blow out. Take his advice about the anchor locker drain as well. I had a very minor problem there as well. While you are looking for leaks, take a close look at your lower pintle. I had some reinforcement work to do there to tighten up that leak when I bought mine. I enlarged the holes a bit to make sure nothing was rotten around them... Filled and redrilled them then used a small backing board because I'm paranoid a little. Anyhow, check it out... Your lazarette hatch is likely to leak too. Split some thin walled small hose down the middle and make yourself a gasket. Else keep it clear of leaves and spiders in there or she will leak onto your battery box. Enjoy your h23.
