Replacing teak deck step

I've refinished the teak deck steps on my 1980 Hunter 33 to the point that it may be time to get a fresh start by replacing the teak. I doubt they are a stock item anywhere but it seems like a pretty straight forward project (famous last words!) Has anyone done this? I haven't been able to find a source of grooved solid 48" x 10" planks yet. Any ideas? Thanks!

Steve, With a little practice and patience, and a good table saw with a sharp blade, you can have as many grooves as you want.

True but how about the wood

I haven't been able to find teak that is roughly 48" x 10" with or without grooves. I guess that's my first goal. Thanks for your suggestion..

Sawmill or a Hardwood dealer

I get my teak from a local sawmill/dealer. They do some internet business but I'm not sure what would they will sell and ship online. Check out www.hearnehardwoods.com I might suggest mahogony instead of teak. It is MUCH cheaper and looks just as good IMHO. A 10" wide board might be a little harder to come by and a bit more expensive.

deck step

I replaced mine and self-milled them out of iroko. Bear in mind that the port and starbord are not identical (at least on mine) so use each side for a pattern. The pieces are relatively thin. I started with a rectangular piece of wood and ran it over a dado blade to get the groves. I then laid the old piece over and traced a pattern and cut with a saber saw. Rounded the edges with a router. Countersink your screw holes. I epoxied over my old holes and drilled new ones into the fiberglass. I suggest thinking about how you want to finish the to aid in species selection. Some oily tropical woods do not take varnish without lots of prep while mohagany accepts it well. If you want to oil, that is another question.

Yeah, their website is pretty cool. You should go in there and walk around sometime. It's amazing what they have in there. I enjoy poking around the 3 stories of storage racks. Nice people too.
