I have an 86 Oday 222 and I want to replace the line for the swing keel this winter. Any suggestions as how to go about it? This is a new boat for me.
There's a lot of info in the archives on this site on how to replace the pendant line on your centerboard. I've written a lot on it myself as I also own an 86 O'Day keel/centerboard sloop that I bought new years ago.
Replacing the line is simple provided you can get at the bottom of the keel which is easier said than done. It's important for you to understand that there is a single sheave up inside the keel slot in which the pendant line for the centerboard rides through. For this reason you should tie a string to the end of the old pendant line and pull it out through the keel. Then tie the end of the new pendant line to the string and pull it up into the cockpit and connect the shackle to the centerboard.
Getting the boat off the trailer can be very dangerous so I'll let you make the call on trying to do it yourself or having it lifted at a boatyard. So in the meantime check out the archives on the O'Day 222 keel/centerboards. There is a wealth of pics and info on it. If you have any other questions, just fire away.
