I will haul the boat soon and I am thinking about replacing the original stuffing box with the new PSS. Every comment that I have read is positive and the forum articles are very clear on the "how to". I still have an important question. Is it necessary to drop the rudder in the H31 in order to back out the propeller shaft enough to remove the original stuffing box and install the new PSS? Regards Ed

Stuffing box removal

Ed, You need only about four inches of clearance to remove the stuffing box but you will also gain about two inches of space when you remove the coupling flange from the shaft.- Removing the flange will probably be the most difficult part of the job since everything else is easy but the instructions that will come with the PSS seal will be very helpful in removing the flange from the shaft. I don't know the H31 but I can't believe that the rudder will be that close to the prop. I did it on my H310 with no problem. Lee
