My standing rigging is original and 13 years old ...looks good all needs to be replaced for safety's sake. Could not find my answer in archives but my question is what have some of you paid? Materials only? Labor if installed? My boat is a Catalina 270

Not necessarily

Just because it's 10 years old, it may not need replacement - a lot depends upon how much use and maintenance the rigging has had. Having said that, it won't hurt to replace it but why not first have a reputable rigger inspect it to be sure?

Standing Rigging

I replaced the standing rigging on my H37C in 2003. I had it made up by SECO SOUTH in Florida. When my boat was built they did the original standing rigging. Total price was about $1000 and we installed it ourselves. Every piece was a perfect fit.

Same Concerns

Hi Ken, My boat is 15 years old and I had the same concerns. We normally do the inspection ourselves, but decided to have a rigger do it this year as I was thinking about replacement. He said we were probably good for another five years anyway. Of course our climate is quite a bit different from yours. Hope this helps. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5

I also have a '94 270 and have replaced most of

the running rigging over the last couple years. Got the main halyard at this site, ~$90 for Samson XLS braid with shackle spliced on. A forged shackle can be $125 all by itself so spec any hardware appropriate for your use (I don't need a forged shackle). Most of the other rope I used was Sta-set or Stay-set X I purchased on sale and generally would be $60-$70 a line this way. Might also check the clearance items on this site as they often have some returns etc.

Repalce Rigging

I've had some dealings with SecoSouth and found them very helpful. I also thought their prices were reasonable http://www.secosouth.com/mrs.asp Secosouth, Inc. 2111 34th Way Largo, FL 33771 Toll Free: 888-535-7326 Tel: 727-536-1924 Fax: 727-539-6314

I believe they are talking about the standing rigging. Running rigging although important is not nearly as disastrous as a standing rigging failure. Gary, your rig may be in good shape, but I would strongly recommend replacing the headstay. It will cost you a little over $100 for the part if you install yourself, but this is the one stay that will cost you the entire rig when it goes.

Standing rigging

Thanks to all for responses. For peace of mind have decided to replace rigging, inspection showed no visible issues but we push the boat hard and I dont want to get dismasted and hurt someone and find out that my deductible won't cover it. Ken

not necessarily also

our standing rigging is 28 yrs old and still appears to be in real good shape. had it checked when we bought the boat 2 yrs. ago. surveyor even remarked at it's condition. i know the 2nd owner (he bought boat when 2 yrs. old) and it has never been replaced. the only thing i did replace was the chain plates last yr as there was crevice corrosion found when i had to rebed for leaks. i'm not saying that this is normal, only that age is not the only determining factor as much as use and abuse is. i would definately have it checked though, because it is better safe than sorry and for peace of mind. that being said i am going to replace the stand. rig piece meal ie; aft lowers, then fwd lowers, then side stays, and finally the for and aft stay in the next three to four yrs, for piece of mind!!!!

Not sure what labor rates

....are in Florida, but around here (mid-Chesapeake Bay), it would cost you about $1400-1700 to have a professional rigging shop replace the standing rigging on your boat. You can reduce costs by having the rigging made up for you and doing the labor to install it yourself. Another worthwhile alternative to think about if your current rig seems sound but is aging, is to replace a backstay/forestay one season, uppers the next, and lowers the year after that. This spreads the cost/pain over a longer period and seems to make it more affordable.... To me, the time to replace otherwise "good looking" standing rigging is when you are thinking about it a lot, particularly when sailing with boat heeled to 20 degrees or more....

Must have been asleep, somhow saw running

rigging. Catalina uses closed turnbuckles, stainless tube over brass turnbuckle, naturally the tube corrodes to the brass. So, first try to move all those stainless covers up to see if you can access the turnbuckles. Other than tuning, your rigging may be okay. Probably need to reseize the shrouds because it's often overlooked. So, free the turnbuckles, inspect and try to tune. You can have a rigger do an inspection for about $300 if necessary. As Alan mentioned headstays are often hidden in furlers, are pretty critical, and often susceptable to unseen damage. If you go to the trouble to remove the furler might be a good idea to replace the headstay and not worry about it.
