Replacing standing rigging on 94 H26

I have done a lot of forum searching but was unable to find anyone talking about cost to completely replace their standing rigging. Is there anyone out there that has done it and can recommend a source and let me know the ball park cost? I will be taking the boat out of the water soon and want to start my winter projects. I have decided to replace based on the fact that the 20 mph gusts I was out in yesterday had my leeward rigging completely slack. This makes me believe that the previous owner sailed this way for awhile and put undo stress on the rigging. Thank you for your help.

Dfisher;

I am not sure if you ever got up with Kermit to go over and measure the stern rail seats while the boat was at Smith Mt. Lake. Anyway the boat is now gone.

As for the original rigging of the H26 it was made by Seco South in the Tampa and St. Pete area. You can contact Gene as she was there when the rigging was made.

I have posted the fact I am returning to the area in about a month and if you wish for me to talk or email me in the future, feel free to contact me via this forum. In fact I hosted some regattas at VISA many years ago and knew the Bernards. I know the ins and outs of the Hunter 26 oh too well as it was internationally introduced by me of all places at SMith Mt. Lake and then Annapolis.

That sounds more like a need to tune the rig.

Replacement usually is indicated by corrosion and breaking wire strands. Inspect the wire where it attaches to each fitting. When the mast is down and the wire is slack, look for kinks.

I agree tuning the rig would be a start. I just tuned my Oday 272. Plenty of info on you tube on how to do it. Or hire a rigger.

Just tune it

Read your manual and tune it first in the driveway before assuming the wires are bad. When I got my boat the mast was leaning 2 feet to starboard, had no mast bend and etc. I tuned it before taking it out the first time. Buy a loos gauge and do it right for about a $75 to a $100 bucks for the gauge, way cheaper than new rigging!

Purchased a Hunter 26 on April 1..lots of trouble. Past owner didn't even clean out the porta potti. What is the correct placement of the side stays..ie..short side stay in forward or aft fastening point.

I always get a little nervous when someone says look for kinks. I just sold a 91' Mac 26S. Had it for 10 years. Being a trailer-able sailboat over the years the standing rigging had some bends, don't know if I would call them kinks. I just got a 94' H26 two months ago and it has a couple bends in the standing rigging too.

It's always been my thought that if there is no corrosion or broken strands/fish hooks it should be okay. Should I be concerned over bends? When you say kinks, would that be a real bad bend?

Should old standing rigging be replaced just because it is old?

Doug;

I was the former top dealer and much involved with these boats. Please take some photos and post them so we can help you. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Dave,
I am trying to rig a 1994 Hunter that I have purchased. The rigging is in good shape but I am not clear as the placement of the side stays. Does the shorter of the side stays get placed in the aft or forward attachment points.
Thank you

On a H25 the D's (shorter DIAGONAL) shrouds are forward. If you look at the chainplate, it should be angled slightly in to match the angle of the shroud to the mast, where the aft will be perfectly vertical.

Dave,
Thank you. The boat shop could not be sure so I turned to you. The Hunter I have has two u shaped bolts on either side of the boat with turn buckles any ached to the stays. I presently have the shorter wires set in the aft position and the longer stays that pass thru the spreader bar ends to the forward position. I will just switch them. The manual is not very clear.

Stay well

I saw the shrouds attached both ways but in the end it did not appear to have much difference. Old me always had the outer shrouds aft but other dealers said it did not matter on the H 26. I will leave that decision up to you sir.
