Replacing sheaves in deck organizer

The two sheaves on my deck organizer that trail the main halyard and boom vang lines back to the cockpit have basically disintegrated. The two stainless steel screws that serve as the post seem to be frozen. My question is: (1) how are these screws anchored in the deck...into a screw insert, a block of wood with a washer/nut; and (2) how do I remove these screws short of using a battery operated iimpact driver. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Those screws are going into an insert. Depending on what maintenance has been done in the past during any rebedding, there can be a substantial amount of sealer in the threads. The last time I disassembled one, the screws came out, but slowly, and with considerable force. It was all the gunk on the screws. Actually, there was a lot of resistance due to the bedding gunk between the screws and the actual deck organizer once removed!

I personally would be intimidated using an impact driver. I cannot recall the details of the inserts, but I would not want to spin one, if the screw is only boud up in the insert and not the organizer. Rather, I would try to slowly back them out. Find an appropriate tipped screw driver that can completely engage the Phillips head, and also has a hex-drive feature below the handle. Many larger mechanics screw drivers can be turned with a wrench for extra leverage.

Bear down as hard as you can to prevent the screw driver from camming out, and use a wrench to increase your lever effort. This hopefully wll get the screws to yield.

I just replaced these myself and had to use a screwdriver with a squared shaft so I could use a wrench for leverage to break the screws loose. I had to walk them out so they would come up evenly. I cleaned up the bushing and purchased replacement sheaves from APS.http://www.apsltd.com/p-8946-38mm-acetal-solid-bearing-sheave.aspx I also needed the sheaves for the exit blocks at the base of the mast http://www.apsltd.com/p-9231-38mm-acetal-solid-bearing-sheave.aspx. I dremeled out the sheave axle, drilled the old axle hole to 1/4",replaced sheave and replaced the axle with a 1/4" X 1/2" clevis pin. Saved a lot of money doing it this way and now I'm able to easily change the sheaves when the wear.

Good luck!

I just replaced the organizers on my 1987. I didn't want to use an impact driver with a hammer fearing I might shatter the surrounding fiberglass. I took the bit holder off the impact driver, attached it to a socket wrench with a 16" handlle and using the phillips bit slowly worked out the screws. I used PB Blaster to help loosen the screws. Work the screw heads back and forth slowly a 1/4 inch at a time. When replacing the screws clean out the brass feamale end with WD-40 and always coat the stainless steel screws with anti-seize lubricant

Thanks...You have given me a wonderful idea. I just did buy a craftsman hand impact tool. However, I agree with your not wanting to use a hammer. Your suggestion to use the head of the impact driver with a ratchet might just do the trick.

thanks again
