I hope to replace my old CDI reefer, continuous line, roller furling over the winter. I want to do it myself. The mast will be off the boat ( 83 Catalina 30 TR) Since I want to do it myself what brand would be the simplist for me to attempt?

CDI

My son and I installed a CDI Flexable Furler on our last boat (Gloucester 22) and it was pretty easy. The furler worked great.

Another vote for CDI

I think CDI is supposed to be the easiest dyi installation as it does not require recutting the forestay (usually), and has no upper swivel unit. I have the CDI on my Oday 23 and love it.

CDI installation

Bill (or anyone) can the install be done with the mast up? I need to replace (or adjust) the internal halyard and may need to remove the extrusion to get to the top where the halyard enters. mike

harken

I installed a harken system on my hunter 25 it was easy and it has worked flawlessly since (2 years). I replaced the forestay and had it sized by west marine for my boat and my furler.

may be a better deal for your size boat John. I found it to be comparably priced, in my neck of the woods, to the CDI FF6 and I think the Hood is a better unit. It can fit over an existing jib stay making for an easy install. Kevin

Profurl is the best....

...that's my opinion.

Thank you all.

I appreciate all the responses. I hope to pick one and tackle the job before it gets too cold.

CDI for a Catalina 30 tall?

CDI might be the simplest to do, but is it good enough for the conditions you sail? Would something more robust be necessary to reef in a heavy blow?

Mast up installation

The directions say you can do it with the mast up but I didn't. I was very anal about checking and rechecking my measurements/fit before I cut the plastic foil. You do use your existing forestay and turnbuckles without alteration. Others may be more robust but so is their price.
