I have to replace the furler on my 1989 Hunter 30. I would appreciate suggestions. My insurance adjuster wants to wrap my file.

Most Hunter 30 of that vintage moved there furler above deck if you can get your insurance adjuster to pay for it a babystay needs to be added to bow to give an attachment point for the furler above deck but that would have to be handled by a rigger

Excellent recommendation by Warren. The manufacturers rating cutoff between the Furlex 100 and 200 models is right at 30' of boat length. It would depend if your boat sports a working jib or a Genoa but you could not go wrong with the F-200 model. Parts availability and customer service are tops and the units are quality built and provide good performance.

Furlex is the way to go. You get a new forestay (so you are not putting a new furler on an old forestay - hence quality control over all components and no additional price) and you also get the blocks to lead the line aft as well as the halyard restrainers, all of which are extra money from competitor products. And, the engineering is top notch........and it really works very well even when the wind is blowing stink. That is my 2 cents. I might add that Hunter uses Furlex on their new boats now too.

I put on a ProFurl 290 a couple years ago and have been very happy.

I never quite like my Furlex 100. It uses loose ball bearings instead of cage type. So when I had to re-sit the bottom drum, that was years ago when I didn't know sh*t about sailing stuff, I ended up with ball bearings running all over my fore deck!! Managed to to put back all bearings but perhaps 1 or 2. Its been working for last 14years BUT never felt smooth and when wind picks up, its a job for Arnie...the Terminator guy, to roll up he headsail ;)
