I need to replace the fore , aft , and upper shrouds this spring on my '74 C22. I am ordering them from Catalina Direct this aft, is it a matter of just changing them out ? Any tips appreciated.

If that many need replacement, and especially if they are the originals, replace them all, then you know where you're at. Simple replacement depends on how the old stays were assembled. Are there swaged eye's on the ends, or studs? The Catalina Direct kit includes new open body turnbuckles, and are made from 316 stainless steel cable.

Thanks , I would not be surprised if there original, the the fore and aft stays look new , I am ordering everything else . Left her in the lake a little late in the year and November storms found the weak spots.

A "74" model, if original, probably still has the lighter cable on the fore and aft lowers. If original, it also has the smaller, lighter mast,(that the racer's LOVE). Once they started putting genoas and spinnakers on the boats, they were stressing the mast, so the factory went to all 1/8" cable on all the stays.

If you're interested in saving hundreds of dollars on new rigging, consider finding a local industrial rigger to build it for you. Many of them are very experienced in working with stainless steel because it's become a popular architectural railing material and they don't charge you extra for putting it on a boat ;) Besides eliminating the hassle of measuring and/or shipping your old rig, you also support a local business.

Here's a comparison of example costs from last Fall:

Catalina Direct: $4.00/ft. complete
West Marine: $1.02/ft. cable only
McMaster-Carr: $0.85/ft. cable only
Local industrial rigger: $1.13/ft. complete

I had great results and explain the process in Standing rigging replacement on my blog. In fact, I'm having them make a few small customizations to my rig right now. It's nice to be able to describe them face to face.
